Before my informational interview, I looked up the company my contact works for and what it’s building. I didn’t look him up personally, so my questions were about the industry instead of his career. I wanted to ask whether handwritten code will disappear soon and, since his company works in cybersecurity, how AI affects security….
Platform Choice & Justification I chose YouTube because it’s where I’ve learned almost every hobby skill I have. YouTube counts as a social learning platform because the content is made by regular people, not just institutions. Anyone can upload a tutorial, viewers add tips and corrections in the comments, and creators make follow-up videos based…
I was stuck on a coding exercise. My program kept giving me nothing back, even though I could see the right answer appear partway through. So I made a post in my course’s Discord help forum and followed the community’s quick support guide: a descriptive title, tags, a link to the lesson, my code, what…
When I started @nav.tries, my Instagram page for golf swing and DJ practice reels, I assumed I was building my own learning network. Looking back, design choices I never noticed built a lot of it for me. The biggest one is the for you page. I never searched for most of the golf coaches and…
Building a diverse and inclusive PLN sounds simple until you try it, because the hard part isn’t inviting different voices in. It’s making sure they aren’t treated as guests in someone else’s network. The first challenge: Moore (2016) describes an “inclusion” diagram in which a few differently patterned dots sit inside a bubble of identical…
I didn’t really think of Discord and LinkedIn as part of the same “network” until I started mapping it out for this course. LinkedIn feels like the formal the place where I connect with recruiters and alumni. Discord is more chill. CS study servers and tool-specific communities where people answer questions in real time. What’s…
When I think about my own digital identity, I don’t think of one profile. I think of at least two. There’s my LinkedIn, where I’m a fourth-year Computer Science student applying to software co-ops, careful about how I frame my project experience. And there’s @nav.tries on Instagram, where I post golf swing clips and DJ…
Current Coordinates I’m a fourth-year Computer Science student at UVic, finishing my remaining courses online this term. My background is technical: Python, Git, shell scripting, a small Node/Express blog app I built to understand how a web stack fits together. Nobody has ever taught me learning theory. What I have instead is a decade of…
